Kindle or Sony Reader?
I’m thinking of getting one of these. I’d be getting the Kindle without 3G, as I have Wi-Fi in my house. It seems the Kindle is more popular and on Amazon it has reviews from tech sites and such that say its the best. For Sony I’d be getting the Pocket. I like the fact that it has a touchscreen and I can get it in pink, not just black. But it’s also $40 more. I’m not sure what software is actually better to use, so if someone could help with that. Also can the Kindle do Google Books?
The Sony units are expensive. They are also extremely durable (metal casing, instead of plastic) and elegantly designed.
The whole wireless debate is pointless–unless you really want the newspapers delivered wirelessly to your e-reader, you just don’t need it. I mean how often do you need to purchase a book while standing in line?
I have been using an older model Sony PRS-505 for over two years. I have purchased and read over 650 books during that time. I have also dropped my Reader more times than I would like to admit. Yup. Dropped it. 3-4 feet. It sustained no damage. The number of times I would have had to replace it certainly makes the cost worth it.
The Kindle uses a format for e-books that is exclusive to them. You can get books from other retailers, but you have to make sure they are labeled for Kindle use.
Sony uses the industry standard format. It can also use PDF format without conversion. It is relatively easy to purchase books from other e-bookstores because these are the two most common formats available. The software is easy to use and the menus are logical.
The easiest way to determine which software you would be happier with is to download both to your computer (free downloads from both) then download some of the free titles available from each and see how it works. This way, no matter which you choose, you have lost nothing.
